Dear Weary Mom,
Do you have a favorite spot in your home? A place where you can just sit or stand, and for that moment, all is well. My favorite spot is at my kitchen window, especially on a gray or rainy day in the spring. Let me tell you why I love this spot, and hopefully, in so doing, provide some rest for your spirit.
We have a creek that runs down the hill behind our house. As the spring rains begin, we can see ducks and occasionally we’ll get a glimpse of the new ducklings, swimming through the water. The trees are a rich, deep shade of green with the new growth and spring showers. There’s a slight layer of moisture on the grass, adding a sparkle across the entire back lawn. As my children practice piano, the scene outside seems almost like one you’d expect to find in an old English novel-turned-movie. I wish I could capture the magic of the moment.
But more than that, I wish I could wrap up the warmth of God’s love that I feel while resting in my favorite spot. These times of standing and being present in the moment, looking out at such a peaceful scene, are perfect. There is an overwhelming sense of God’s love and peace.
My very favorite part of being in that spot, focusing on God, is the closeness I feel to Him. I remember one particular day when I went to wash some dishes, and glanced up at the beauty outside my window. I was having a particularly tough day, and felt burdened by the things at hand. I remember thinking about one of my favorite stories –
When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning,
an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city.
“Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked.
“Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
II Kings 6:15-17
As I stood in my favorite spot, pondering my situation, thinking through this story in II Kings, my breath caught in my chest. This God who protected Elisha and all who were with him, is the same God I love and serve today. The same God who sent horses and chariots to do battle in the spiritual realm for Elisha, is the same God who sends His angels to do battle in my spiritual realm even now!
For that brief moment, I felt the sense of God’s amazing protection, knowing that His angels are positioned around me, to provide protection. Just over that hillside, down to where the creek runs, I can imagine that they are there, at the edge of our property. Why? Because God doesn’t change – He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Whatever my situation was that day, my God was there to protect me. And while I did not physically see horses and chariots, my heart saw the protection of the Lord.
Dear Weary Mom, what are you struggling with today? Maybe you can’t physically be in my favorite spot, but would you please go to your own favorite spot, just for a minute? Would you sit, or stand there, just for a moment, and breathe? Close your eyes and take a deep breath, and then open them and look around. Whatever is concerning you today, let go of it, just for a moment. Remember you are safe, you are protected, and you are loved by a God who never changes!
Dear Weary Mom, run to your favorite spot – meet God there. I pray that He will open your heart to see the protection He has placed around you today!
