When Grace Rains

Have you ever been caught in a damp, chilly rainstorm? The raindrops beat like ice against you, chilling you to the core. The wind whips around to make sure that you are sufficiently soaked. Your goal is to reach a place of shelter in order to dry off and find warmth. The chill of the rain can leave you feeling damp and cold, though, even after you are out of the storm.

So it is with the storms of life. We are often caught in some kind of storm, wondering what God’s plan is, wondering how we will overcome, how we will manage to find warmth from the bone-chilling cold of the storm.

Why does God allow storms in our life? I wish I knew the answer to warm your heart.

But Jesus experienced storms while He was on the earth.

In Mark 4:35-41, we read the story of Jesus in a storm.

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

The disciples were frightened - they were with Jesus and they were frightened of the storm raging around them. What did they do? They woke Jesus, they told him of the storm, and Jesus did what He always does.

He made a way through the storm.

I don’t know what the disciples were expecting Jesus to do, but I don’t think they were expecting Him to calm the storm. They questioned each other after His rebuke to the sea, indicating their surprise or maybe disbelief, possibly even awe, that He had so much authority.

Jesus offered grace in the midst of their storm. He showed favor upon them by calming the storm, by exercising His authority over the rain in their life.

Have you noticed, though, that sometimes God doesn’t choose to put an immediate end to our storms. He doesn’t always pluck us out of the middle of the storm and plant us onto dry, warm ground. Sometimes the storm goes on. He doesn’t come and offer grace in our lives by ending the rain.

Sometimes He offers grace by letting it rain.

Have you ever gone through a situation and begged God to let you out of it?
Have you so desperately wanted to wake up from what must be a bad dream, because there’s no way that you would let yourself be in the position you now find yourself?
Have you endured the bone-chilling rain of one cold storm after another, only to realize as you look around, that it’s still raining?!?!

My answers to those questions there? Yes, yes, and YES!

The storms have been hard, the raindrops have been cold and brutally hard to withstand some days.

One day, though, I realized that though the rain still pours down, it no longer hurts. It’s not the bitter, bone-chilling, soul-scary storm it had been.

During the start of the storm, my soul was parched. Like the disciples, I ran to Jesus telling Him that this storm had sprung up, seemingly out of nowhere, in my life. I was desperate for a way out; this was not of my doing and I wanted no part of it.

And Jesus said, “Wait.”

Like we, as parents, may cause our children to pause in their vicious cycles of running through our house by placing a hand firmly on their head, so Jesus did with me. The rain did not stop. In fact it seem to beat mercilessly at times.

Then one day, I woke feeling refreshed. I woke having soaked in the goodness of the Lord.

You see, for a long time, my faith and trust may have been placed too much in people, in circumstances, in myself. Not that I didn’t trust God, but that I trusted others too much - I trusted in what I could see, more than in the One whom I could not see.

My soul was not as saturated with the Word of God as it should be. I operated out of dryness and near-emptiness some days. I carried God in my pocket, so to speak, since I was definitely His, but I was doing pretty well with that arrangement.

Until the storm came.

Now, the actual storm was not of my doing. But since we all live in community - our churches, our homeschool groups, our small groups, etc., - we know that when something impacts one person, it often impacts many around them. This was the case for me - the storm was not of my doing, but it sure did (and still does) impact me.

So God allowed the rain, and it was icy - I was cold, desperate, soaked through with the wind-whipped rain. I could not hide. God didn’t pluck me out from the storm and plant me on dry land. Oh, how I wish He had.

But that was not His plan. Instead, His plan was to saturate my soul. His plan was to make sure that I stood in a place where I had to choose God, or choose my own path.

Friends, if I can share one thing - just one?
Please -
Always, always, always
Choose God.

God didn’t extend grace by taking me out of the situation. Rather, He knew the storm was coming and He planned it for my own growth. God sent the rain, in my case, to fill me up, to saturate my soul, to nourish my heart.

And this can happen for you as well. When the storms come, when you beg God to move you, don’t be afraid if He doesn’t. If He keeps you firmly planted, know that sometimes the best - the best for our hearts, our bodies, our minds, and our souls can come -

When Grace Rains.

10 Little-Known Facts About Me

Yesterday, my friend, Ruth, share a post with 10 little-known facts about herself. I’ve been a little quiet here lately and thought this might be a fun way to get some words “down on paper”. At the beginning of a new year, (well, it’s still sort of the start of a new year, right?) I thought this might be a fun way to share with you a little more about myself.

So - here are 10 little-known facts about me.

1. My first son was born on my 25th birthday. They induced me the day before, but he hung out and waited till my birthday. Now it’s our birthday, and he is the best birthday present! Here he was, at 2 days old (and, no, he never lost his hair):

2. I love bookstores and I love to buy books. However, I rarely finish a book. Don’t get me wrong - I read a lot, but if a particular chapter or section doesn’t keep my attention, I skip it. (Sorry, to all my friends who are avid readers.)

3. I don’t like to ask for help. No matter what it is. It may be small like carrying groceries, or bigger things like childcare. (I am getting better at this.)

sticking together4. This may not be little-known to my friends, but the rest of you probably don’t know that I don’t like wearing shoes. I’d rather wear slippers or flip-flops. Barefoot is even better.

5. I would prefer an evening hanging out with a couple of friends, over a large get-together with a lot of people. In general, I’m not a fan of large groups or crowds.

6. I have an overall favorite color - dark green - and a favorite color for each season.
Spring - pink (but not pale pink, more of a deep, rich pink)
Summer - yellow (like sunflowers)
Fall - orange (a close runner-up is a cranberry shade of red)
Winter - red & silver

7. Tulips are my favorite flowers - but not the kind with the pointy petals (although they are beautiful). I like the ones with the soft, rounded petals.

8. I would rather go out for breakfast than for lunch or dinner. I love breakfast but don’t often make big breakfasts at home. I wish I was a little more awake in the mornings to do that. I make up for it by making huge breakfasts for dinner sometimes.

9. I love to stand outside on a bright, sunny day, lean my head back, close my eyes, breathe deeply, and thank God for peace in that moment.

10. I have some fun hopes to visit New York City in every season. Last summer, my husband and I went up to NYC for a day and it was fabulous. We had a 1-day adventure all over the city, including Central Park (pictured below) seeing many different sites and it was amazing! I’d love to do that each season. One season down, three to go!

Walk By Faith

Lately, the concept of ‘walking by faith’ has been on my mind a lot. Many people I know are facing lots of different challenges. It’s hard to watch others facing challenges, and it’s hard to be in a challenging time. And then to remember that we’re supposed to walk by faith – sometimes that seems to make the whole process just a little more overwhelming.

Why walk by faith? Why should we trust God to lead us on the challenging journeys in life? Why would we trust Him through the valley? Why don’t we take the reins and steer our own course through the challenges of life?

We can walk by faith because God is faithful || rebekahmhallberg.com

Think back to the last big challenging thing in your life – maybe a sickness, maybe a death of a loved one, maybe a time of financial hardship. Perhaps it was something even more difficult.

What did you learn from that situation?

And honestly, I realize that you might feel like screaming at me, “I learned nothing! It was hard and cruel and I hated it!” I hear you. Loud and clear! And I believe you, too. Can I encourage you? I’ll even whisper it: Don’t give up; please keep going.

We’re all on challenging paths at one point or another. We may not even realize what we’re learning or that we’re learning something. But if I know one thing, just one, it’s this – God is faithful!

You may not have found what it is that God wants you to learn. I feel that way, too, with some of the challenges and struggles in my life. Sometimes I wonder, too, if there is even anything to learn.

Here’s the thing – we may not know what the reason was for the hard time we endured. It may even be that God is using it in someone else’s life, as a testimony for His glory.

Did you begin the struggle (and I don’t mean that like, ‘did you pick the fight,’ but rather, did you have to start working through the hard area)? Did you travel down the road? And did it, eventually, end? Maybe the end isn’t here yet. Maybe you’re still walking. But other struggles – they ended at some point, yes?

If we can learn one thing, you and I together, and only one thing, maybe it needs to be this:

God is Faithful.

So, why should we walk by faith? Why trust God in the valley?

Because He is faithful. He promises to restore the years the locusts have eaten (Joel 2:25). He promises to be with us, all the way (Deuteronomy 31:6 and Hebrews 13:5).

I love this passage from Isaiah chapter 61, verses 1-3:

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.

Isn’t that beautiful? “…oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.”

Why ‘walk by faith’ and ‘trust in God’? Because He holds us in His hands; He has a plan for our lives; He can take the mess of our lives and use it for His splendor!

If you’re struggling to walk by faith, can I encourage you? I am praying for you. I am trusting God with you. I am walking through valleys, just like you, and I am trusting my future, my journey, my days, to a God I can’t see with my eyes, but I can feel with my heart, because He is faithful!

More Than Words: Using Words to Dig Deeper Into the Word

**Please note - I received a free copy of this product to review. My review is based solely on my opinion, and I am sharing it with you because I believe it fits with my overall purpose to encourage, inspire and help you draw closer to Jesus.

Are you looking for a new and different way to approach devotions? Maybe you’re busy and you don’t feel you have a lot of time for devotions? Or have you been out of the habit of regularly having devotions and you aren’t sure where, or how, to jump back into regular devotions? Stephanie from The MultiTaskin Mom has put together a wonderful, short devotional called “More Than Words - Using Words to Dig Deeper Into the Word” that may be just the tool you need to refocus your time with the Lord.

Stephanie’s devotional is different from other devotionals I’ve used in the past. I have often been drawn to devotionals focusing on different passages, or different themes. This devotional focuses on words. You read the word for the day, and then you define the word. Yes, you might need to make use of a dictionary! I liked the aspect of looking up the meaning of the word so that I could be sure I was understanding it correctly.

After you read and define the word, you go find the word in Scripture. That’s a different twist isn’t it? There is no set Scripture for each day. Rather, you find the word in the Bible (you can use a Bible concordance or an online concordance) and you meditate on that passage for the day. Studying the Scripture containing the word for the day helps you focus on that word and take its meaning to heart.

The next step in the devotional is to write a brief statement of how you will apply what you learned about that word. Maybe you will simply choose to keep studying the word on another day, or maybe God will give you a special insight as to how that word, and the passage, can take root deep in your heart.

The final step in this devotional is a section to write out a prayer over the word. Your word for the day might be {Grace}. After you have defined it, found it in Scripture and considered how to apply the word/passage in your life, you’d write out a short prayer over the word. Perhaps there is a specific instance where you can extend grace to another; this would be a good place to write out a prayer over that situation. Maybe someone extended grace to you; thank God, in this space of the devotional, for that precious gift.

This devotional will not take you long. This is a great way to jump-start your devotions for the new year, or to take a fresh look at some passages that may seem all-too familiar.

Personally, I am participating in the #My500Words challenge - a challenge to write at least 500 words every day (every. single. day.) for the month of January. I’m looking forward to using some of the words in this devotional to be inspiration for some of my days of writing.

If you’re interested in getting this devotional (and I hear there will be more in this series!) head over to Stephanie’s blog where you can place your order. For a limited time, this devotional is just 99 cents - don’t miss out!

Blessings, dear friends!

My 500 Words

So here we are, two days into January, and like I mentioned yesterday, I don’t really make resolutions because I have a tough time keeping them. Yesterday I read about the “My 500 Words Challenge” - a challenge for the month of January, to write 500 words each day. It can be for a book, a blog, anything - just not email.

My 500 Words challenge - sharing my personal journey || rebekahmhallberg.com

So here it comes - my big announcement.

I am using the My 500 Words challenge to work on a book that God has placed on my heart. I have had the title, the theme, and the ideas for putting it all together for a long time now. And now, with this challenge, I have the final push I need to actually spend time on it.

I have absolutely no idea if it will take the whole month of January, or if it will take longer than that, but writing at least 500 words toward it each day will certainly go far in helping me complete it.

Feel free to check in on me and make sure I’m doing my work each day. A great place to check my progress will be on Facebook - have you joined us there yet? Even easier, on the right hand side of the blog there is a Facebook “Like” box - just click the work “Like” and you’ll be added to the page.

I hope you’ll consider joining us over there - I try to share a lot of encouragement from many different sources, not just from my blog. I share a little extra about my personal life, and I try to interact with everyone on a slightly deeper level than just through blog comments.

Anyway - if you are a writer, or even if you aren’t and you just need a challenge, check out the My 500 Words challenge and jump in. And then let me know if you’re joining in - either in the comments here, or on Facebook. I’d love to have you along for the journey on Facebook.
