Connect With Me

New York City

My husband and I have been married for 14 years now - hooray! This year we decided to take a day to go to New York City and see some of the sites. We did a little homework and made a list of a few things we wanted to see, some we hoped to see, and we happened by a few more while we were up there. My only problem? How to fit 176 pictures into 1 blog post. ;-) Don’t worry; I’ve chosen out a select few.

We did our homework and found that parking in NYC was actually cheaper than many places near us in Philadelphia. That was a big surprise! I think it was because it was a Saturday rather than a weekday. Even still, “cheap parking” is not usually something one associates with New York City.

Our first stop was The Top of the Rock - Rockefeller Center. This view of the city was gorgeous! The Top of the Rock is so much cheaper than touring the Empire State Building, although the Empire State Building still remains a must-see as it is an iconic part of the city landscape. The elevator had a brief history of Rockefeller Center played on the ceiling as you went up to the 67th floor, and then another video clip that they play on the way down. It helps to make the ride a lot more interesting! You take the elevator to the 67th floor, and from there you can take an escalator to the 69th floor, and then a short flight of stairs up to the 70th floor.

This is the view from the 69th floor, facing the north end of Manhattan. The view of Central Park was beautiful - such a vast area of peace and tranquility in the heart of the city that never sleeps.

Looking toward the southern end of the island, you can see the Empire State Building, standing tall above most other buildings nearby. Just to the right of it, and in the background is the new Freedom Tower, which will be featured in another picture. On the river, past the Freedom Tower are 3 small islands, one of them being home to the Statue of Liberty. On a more clear day, I’m told you can see her as a welcoming point, even from this distance.

When we went back down to the main level, it was difficult to find a spot to take a picture of all of Rockefeller Plaza in its full summer beauty. One thing that my husband and I did not know, or realize, is that the skating rink that we so often see in winter, becomes a restaurant in summer. Since it was difficult to find a good vantage point for a picture, I decided to share this amazing capture of the plaza by the experts at the Lego store, which occupies a building right on the plaza. And yes, it’s ALL made out of Lego.

From Rockefeller Plaza we wandered through a street fair and had some delicious wraps for lunch. We enjoyed the people-watching and marveled at what the city must be like at rush hour on any given work day.

We ventured into Central Park. There seemed to be a good mix of native New Yorkers and tourists, and all were enjoying the peace that came from this hideaway in the heart of the city. We happened onto a concert of classical music, by an orchestra that gives free summertime concerts. We saw a few street shows and were entertained by their antics. We enjoyed the real life scenes from some of our family’s favorite movies and decided that if nothing else, it would be fun to bring the kids with us next time, to enjoy a day in the park.

roosevelt island light 2After spending time in Central Park, we got in the van and drove the whole perimeter of the park, before heading across the Queensboro Bridge, and eventually onto Roosevelt Island. There is a small park at the northern end of the (very small) island, and in that small park there is a small lighthouse. Since my husband loves lighthouses, we spent time trying to figure out where we could (legally!) park on the island, and then we walked up to the park to take a few pictures. Considering that the doorway is standard doorway height (whatever that is, a little over 6 feet, maybe?) you can tell that the lighthouse is not very tall. And it was closed off so we were not able to get much closer, but we were still glad for the walk and the gorgeous view from the island back into Manhattan.

We decided that our last stop would be Liberty State Park, to look back at the southern end of Manhattan and to see the Statue of Liberty, closer than we’d ever been before. Someday we’ll take a trip out to the island, but it will be when we have the kids with us. We arrived shortly before sunset and it almost seemed chilly as the cool breeze came off the river. This is a gorgeous park, full of history and reverence, as you can imagine that some of the first immigrants probably had their first steps on America’s mainland right there at the park.

Please excuse the poorer quality of this next picture - the wind had picked up and it’s a long distance shot. For ease of travel, I had only taken my phone for picture-taking. The picture is looking back into Manhattan. The prominent building in the right-hand side of the picture is the new Freedom Tower, complete with the spire. The tall building in the left-hand side of the picture is the Empire State Building, and just to the right of that, also with a more pointed roof, is the Chrysler Building.

Manhattan and Midtown 2

It was a beautiful day in every sense. These pictures are only a small part of our day, believe it or not! A few other highlights - we parked right by Carnegie Hall, we traversed the Brooklyn Bridge, we spotted Radio City Music Hall on our way to Rockefeller Plaza, we drove by Trump Tower near Central Park - just a wonderful day! The weather was warm but not too hot, the company was the best, the views were spectacular, and the celebration of our anniversary was wonderful! We’re looking forward to taking another trip back up to New York City with the kids. A special thanks to my parents for keeping the kids to help make this celebration possible!

Love Again

Love AgainYesterday morning I read a post from Lisa-Jo Baker, in which she described the need to focus on our marriages more than the current state of our life – and moms, you know that’s something we’re often thinking about! She said that a Thursday is a great day for her to fall in love with her husband all over again. Her article has stuck with me, and no matter what, I can’t shake it – in a good way.

familyAnd so maybe a Friday in the spring is a great day for me to fall in love again with my husband.

We’re coming up on 14 years married. Last year I tried to write a beautiful post for our anniversary, but apparently you can’t fit these things into a box. And so, at 13 years, 10 months and 14 days, I guess today is a great day to write a love post for the man who is my coffee-and-a-kiss in the morning. It’s really the perfect start to any day!

I stress about the imperfections; he points out all the joy in out-of-the-ordinary.

Tim Sar 4I try to make sure it all gets done; he’s happy with whatever gets done.

I joke that he left me on our honeymoon, to let the seaweed attack me. The reality was that I wasn’t brave enough to continue on the adventure. He has made me much more brave than I ever was on my own. He is my courage.

Because of him, I know that every lighthouse is unique and different, and serves a special purpose. {Seems to me people are like that, too.} He finds joy in studying the specifics – no wonder he knows me so well.

Deep brown eyes – I need to see those more. I need to stop and slow down and find rest in those eyes. I can’t help but smile, especially when I see that twinkle. I need to stop being so busy and make more time to recharge with some great conversation, funny shared jokes, and time looking into his eyes.

Day after day, I struggle to find my identity. I’m mom, teacher, cook, cleaner, driver, scheduler.

T 5But even more importantly? I’m Tim’s wife. Being Tim’s wife makes me better at being a mom, teacher, cook, cleaner, driver and scheduler. Being Tim’s wife makes me a better person.

Before I got married, I would have always guessed I would be the snuggler. I can’t tell you how many times I wake up in the morning on my own side of the bed, with him snuggled up against me. Love it!

He’s my “slow down” when life goes too fast, my “let go” when I hold too tightly.

He’s my “you can do it” when it needs to be done, and my “you’re amazing” when it’s all been completed.

When I talk, he listens. But he doesn’t just listen to my words. He hears my heart. And he can hear my heart, even when my words are few.

Jesus loves me, this I know, because every day, Tim tells me so. When I lose my focus, Tim is there to gently get me back on the path where I should be walking. When I’m overwhelmed, he’s there with the reminder that this is not how it should be.

T 6Our favorite gifts, they call him Daddy. There’s nothing better than their laughter, their cheers and squeals when he comes home, their hide-and-seek, and their countless hours reading together. There’s no doubt of his love – his eyes give him away every time.

Those eyes – my resting place. We all need that special place where we know we’re home. And we need to intentionally plant ourselves there for encouragement and refreshment.

And so, on a plain, everyday Friday, in the spring of the year, I’m in love, all over again. What has come, has passed. What’s ahead will be even better. Why? Because we’re built on love. Happy plain, exciting, ordinary, joyful, in-love-even-more Friday, to the one who hears my heart.

Weekend Getaway

Tim and I celebrated our 13th anniversary last month. We planned for some time to get away for a weekend, and that was *this* weekend.

We found a place about an hour from home and made a reservation. When we arrived, we were offered a room upgrade, which was a pleasant surprise! This was a nice weekend to sit and rest, and really, to just do nothing. We did some shopping on Saturday and found a little museum to go to, but I had taken some reading and some knitting for the evenings, but I set it aside and tried to just “be”. It’s amazing how hard it can be to do that.

This was sunset, the first evening - we were driving back to the inn after dinner, and the sky was just gorgeous. A sky like this sure does make it a little easier to stop and savor the moment!
This picture is taken from the parking lot of the inn, looking up to the back of the house.
This is part of the room that we stayed in. It looked over the street that ran by the front of the inn. We saw many Amish and Mennonite walking by in their traditional outfits.
We sat out back for a few hours the second evening. This picture was taken after 8pm, so you can’t see just how lovely the pink crape myrtle bush really is. But it is gorgeous, I promise!
And this is the pond - in the middle of the picture there’s a stone wall and that is the far side of the pond. The crape myrtle in the top left of this picture is the same one as in the picture above. The lights added more beauty to the already-lovely backyard.
As a bed and breakfast, they take the “breakfast” part quite seriously. We had 2 mornings of 4-course breakfasts! (One could get used to that very quickly!!) The first morning we were served Canary Melon Gazpacho - a cold soup made from canary melon (similar to honeydew), a little yogurt and a slice of a plum in the soup. After that we had locally-made Amish granola that was sweet, full of flavor, and delicious! Following that was a plate of lemon crapes with Amish canned peaches with a side of pork roll. And for dessert (yes, breakfast dessert!) was ginger chocolate fudge. Delicious!
The second day started with a dish of roasted bananas with some sugar and yogurt. Following that course was another helping of locally-made granola. The main plate was eggs cooked in won ton wrappers, with a side of zucchini parmesan muffins. For dessert, a chocolate truffle. So, so good!
We had tea and cookies each night and some time to talk with the other guests. The innkeepers were extremely hospitable and had some fun, historical stories to tell about the inn. If you need a great getaway, check out the Churchtown Inn near Lancaster, PA.
Note: I am not being paid by the Churchtown Inn for this post.
I just wanted to share about a great outing at a wonderful place, with superb service and gracious hosts!

Telling My Story in Photos

I’ve been following Jenny’s blog for some time now. I just recently thought to find her blog on Facebook. She’s hosting a photo link-up this week, with 5 prompts for photos -
1. Your morning routine
2. The contents of something you carry around on a frequent basis
3. Something you pass daily that you have never taken a picture of
4. Your happy place
5. Someone who makes you smile.
I thought this sounded fun so I got to thinkin’ and snappin’! You’ll find my photos for these 5 prompts, below.
First - my morning routine. Coffee & my devotions. It’s important to me to start the day focused on the right things. Devotions each morning help with that.
Second - the contents of something I carry regularly. This is the bag I take with me to my son’s therapy each week. And this is what’s currently in it - 4 pens, someone’s piece of “gold”, sunglasses, a hair clip, scarf I’m knitting for my daughter, Excedrin Migraine, a small part to a Transformer, and Ann Voskamp’s One Thousand Gifts (if you haven’t read it yet, do!)
Third - something I pass daily but hadn’t taken a picture of. Our bed. Last Christmas, we added the white lights around the headboard. The kids love it and so we’ve kept them up to enjoy year-round.
Fourth - my happy place. We had a great time on our vacation to the Outer Banks over Spring Break. We saw a lot of things and had so much fun with the kids! We particularly enjoyed it because it was so quiet while we were there.
And finally - someone who makes me smile. Tim & I are coming up on 13 years of marriage and I love, love, love him!
Thanks, Jenny, for a great idea. It’s so much fun to document different parts of life! Have a great weekend, everyone!

One Month

Hi Everyone!
I just wanted to take a moment & note that this blog has been up for just 1 month. I’ve had the pleasure of coming across so many great blogs & interacting with many of you here and on Twitter.

A few years ago I blogged but kept privacy levels pretty secure as it was mostly for family. Then I started my blog that’s focused on our son’s special needs. I started that one as a way to be open about his issues, especially as a way to share his issues with our church family. At the time I started the blog, he was the only one with special needs that were impacting his ability to function at church. That blog is just a little over a year old & you’re more than welcomed to check it out.

I started this blog last month as a way to focus on the non-special needs side of my life. Because I actually have many interests outside of our guy’s struggles. I wanted an outlet to acknowledge and focus on a lot of the joy already in my life. Yes, I could have tied that in with the other blog and had it as a separate section, but that one already has a pretty devoted list of readers specifically for the special needs side of things.

And while I’ll definitely talk about my kiddos here, and our guy’s special needs (Asperger Syndrome, Sensory Processing Disorder, Speech/Language issues, poor muscle tone) I’m hoping to reserve this blog mostly for other things.

So this blog has been around for 1 month and 1 day and I just wanted to thank you all for reading & joining the site.

I’ve just added Linky Followers and an option to follow me on Twitter. There’s also Google Friend Connect & an option to subscribe my email if that’s easier for you. Also, please feel free to comment. A note about that - I reply to all the comments, so you may want to comment & then click Subscribe by email (below the comment section) to keep up with the comments.

And as promised, here’s an update from Picture Day. They got a lot of great pictures of each kid, and this was one of my favorite shots of all of them together.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Home!

There is nothing better than being home. Although, I loved this vacation SO much. The kids were wonderful, the drive was beautiful (except that the downpour really slowed us down, but even that was pretty), the weather was chilly which was ok, because we were trying to avoid HOT. We got done everything on our list of things we wanted to do. We would have loved an additional day at the beach, but we were there for one full day, and it was perfect!

I was hoping to post daily while we were gone, but the place we were staying had limited wifi access and it wasn’t enough to load pictures or stay online long. So I’m posting a few recap posts over at my other blog. I’d love for you to stop by and check them out - the first one is here.

The best part of the vacation was seeing wild horses in the northern part of the outer banks. They were AMAZING. Absolutely beautiful! I’ll post those pictures another day. If you’re a fan of the movie “Nights of Rodanthe” you’ll enjoy knowing that I could open the door where we were staying, and look up a few streets and see the house from the movie. Beautiful!

So - stop on over to check out the lighthouse post. I’ll be posting regularly again here in a few days. I have to catch up on vacation laundry and all that fun mommy stuff!

Wishing you a wonderful Easter!
