Put to Flight {Grace & Truth}

I was drawn in by the image Charlene was describing. I’ve seen something similar before and it always fascinated me. I never quite drew the same conclusion that she did, though, and that’s what kept me reading.

In her post, Put to Flight, Charlene gives us a very vivid mental image of protection, and setting the enemy to flight. She draws a parallel to our spiritual life, dealing with the enemy, resisting the devil so that he will flee from us. You will be so encouraged by her words and the beautiful imagery she describes.

The Day I Walked Away From My Son (and didn’t go back)

Yes, I did just that. I left my son sitting at a picnic table by himself, and then I drove away.

Ok, let’s start at the end of this story, and then go back and fill in some blanks.

This story has a happy ending, and no, I did not neglect my son.

I shared a little while back that our son was accepted at a very prestigious music camp. This past week was the beginning of his session of camp, so we drove up, stood in the registration line, found his cabin, moved his month’s worth of belongings into the cabin, got the information for the lessons he’ll be taking, and then it was time to go.

The staff were still registering people and our son didn’t know anyone else, so it was hard to really get him connected. I knew that dinner would be the time when they’d start those connections and he’d find out who was in his cabin.

This camp has a very strict “no phones, no internet” policy, so I knew I would go for a little while without knowing how he was.

I didn’t realize it would be almost a whole week….

And so I gave him one more hug, walked away, and started the long drive home.

Alone.

Just like my son.

I left him sitting at picnic tables, reading a book, among a group of 75 kids where he knew no one.

This could have gone two ways.

1. Successfully - in which he would make friends, love what he was doing and my heart could feel peace.

2. Unsuccessfully - in which he would not want to stay, would have a miserable first week, and I would feel forever guilty.

(Now, I know I already told you how this turns out.)

But imagine leaving one of the people who you love most in this world.

This gave me a whole new appreciation for what the Father went through when Jesus went to the cross.

(No, I’m not comparing what I went through to what God went through when Jesus carried His cross up Golgatha, just saying that I understand the concept of “letting your child go” in a new and different way than I ever have before.)

When we had our kids we dedicated them back to God, meaning we knew that they were each a gift from Him. We promised to raise them to know the Lord, to help them grow spiritually, and to teach them to learn to follow God’s will in their lives.

So when the opportunity came for our son to attend this camp, we jumped at it. We knew God was opening a door for our son to pursue his talents. We knew this would be an amazing experience - personally and professionally.

We just didn’t expect that the beginning would be so tough.

I told you this ends well. Let me fill in those details.

My mom, my daughter and I went up to visit on Sunday and to hear my son and the other pianists perform. We arrived at lunchtime so we waited outside for the campers to finish lunch. When he came out and spotted us he came running over and gave us BIG hugs! I asked him if he was having any fun. The HUGE smile, the emphatic YES - they assured me that sending him to this camp was a good idea after all!

More than that, though, he told us about conversations he was having with others.

He’s in a cabin with 5 other guys his age. He said that morning he’d gotten up at 6am (to get a hot shower!) and spent about 90 minutes talking with the guys in his cabin. They must have talked about the fact that he was going to attend the Bible study the conductor was holding.

He said they asked him questions about how good people - those who give to the poor, volunteer, help others - could go to hell, but people who have spent their whole lives committing terrible acts of evil could enter heaven with a “deathbed conversion”.

They asked him questions about why he believes what he does.

And he said that for 90 minutes he had the opportunity to share his faith.

He is 15 years old.

The questions he dealt with can be hard for those of us who have lived our whole lives knowing Jesus.

Teens can ask some tough questions and be hard-headed and hard-hearted about the answers they receive.

And he talked. He just talked. He answered their questions and then he went to the Bible study the conductor held and got refilled.

As a parent, I was proud of his musical achievement (yes, we did hear him in concert that afternoon and he played well!), but I was so much more proud to hear the strength of his faith.

One of his goals in his music is to be able to have a platform to share his faith with others.

At 15 years old, he is successfully achieving that goal!

Sunday evening I left my son in almost the same spot.

This time he was hanging with friends, playing foosball and I knew he was having a great time.

I walked away. I turned to be sure he was okay.

He didn’t look back at me.

So I walked away from my son, for a second week, and didn’t go back.

But God {hope and encouragement}

Welcome back to another week of the Grace & Truth linkup! The post I’m sharing this week caught me with one word - hope. That was my word for 2014, after some traumatic situations in my life. Debbie shared some verses about hope, many of which have become words that grab my heart and remind me that God is still at work.

Debbie refers to them as the “but God” verses.

There is such encouragement in these verses, such hope, when you read them with the emphasis on those two words:

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. Gen. 50:20

I love how those two words capture my attention and remind me that it is God who is at work - who is providing for us, who has the power to redeem our lives, who is our strength.

I’d encourage you to read through the verses in her post and reflect on God’s power at work in your own life and the hope He provides.

Thank you, Debbie, for sharing this post with us at Grace & Truth!

A Blogging Opportunity

Have you ever considered blogging?

Here’s info on a class that I just took (plus a discount for you!)

Maybe you have thought about blogging and are moving toward making a decision to get started?
Maybe you are a blogger but you feel like you’re spinning your wheels and you don’t really know what to do.
Maybe you’re seasoned in blogging but you need to make a few changes to how you do, or you’re ready to branch out and grow your readership.

My friend, Arabah Joy, has created a blogging course that is very easy to follow and understand. I have just finished going through this course - well, mostly. You can work through this course at your own pace, which was one of the biggest draws for me. I needed a course that I could fit into my schedule, but that would give me enough material to really be able to see a difference. And I’ve completed most of the modules…still working on a couple things!

The best part is that the content is delivered by someone desiring to multiply her reach for the Kingdom. Similar courses cost hundreds of dollars, and while they’re well worth it, I’m sure, it’s a lot to invest when you’re just starting out.

AJ has cut down the cost in an effort to make this affordable for every level of blogger. Believe me when I tell you that it’s worth the investment as it will really get you into a great position with what you want to do with your blog.

If you’ve been considering taking your blogging to the next level (even if that means to just get started with blogging) this course is for you!

You can get more information here: Christian Bloggers Bootcamp

PLUS: If you decide to take the course, you can get a 10% discount if you use code RMH10

Christian Bloggers Bootcamp {plus discount code!!}

There are some great freebies that come with this course as well - including:
*a free blog planner
*free access to Author Audience Academy
*free blog at home mom eBook

The lessons include:
*clarifying your “why”
*finding & creating your best content
*being savory in a world of instant gratification
*image creation & visuals

Dear Shame {a farewell letter}

Dear Shame,

It’s been a little while since you last visited. I almost didn’t recognize you.

The last time I saw you, we also ran into Fear, Inadequacy, Pain, Exhaustion, Stress and a few other friends of yours. I felt like I was trapped with all of you, and had no way out. You fooled me into thinking I had to stay at your “party”, that somehow yours was now the badge I had to wear.

One day I realized I didn’t like your party and I couldn’t stand your friends.

Maybe I finally had a good night of sleep; maybe I was just fed up with your cruelty, the way you made me feel.

I remember the day I said, “No more.

It was as simple as opening the door to my house, and my heart, and kicking you out.

Dear Shame - a farewell letter

* * * * *

And now you’re back.

I know just how you came in. You piggy-backed in when Fear came by.

I’m not surprised; you two have been hand-in-hand for some time now.

Anyone working toward redemption, in any form, has to face their failures, their wrong-doings, their SIN, head on. It’s an ugly thing, sin. The realization of just how wrong we were, can be almost too much to bear.

How could we have been so wrong? How will we be able to make amends?

Shame, you’ve come around with a different friend from time to time. I have to tell you, I don’t like this friend. I can deal with Exhaustion, Pain, Inadequacy. They can get me down, they can get anyone down, but it’s not forever. And, I don’t think their efforts are designed to keep us down forever.

But this one - Judgment - he’s hard to figure. Sometimes he seems very real, other times I think I just perceive him to be around. Either way, he causes pain and he seems to incite fear.

Judgment shoves us right back into your corner, Shame.

* * * * *

Here’s the thing, Shame:

You spend a lot of time making sure we feel badly. And you often succeed. You’re very good at how you manipulate our feelings.

But, it doesn’t matter what anyone knows about us. It doesn’t matter if they know the worst of our sins.

You need to know this:

Jesus paid a price for my sins - for all my sins.

He paid the price for everyone’s sins.

Not only that, but He took the guilt, the shame, the pain. He conquered those on the cross.

He conquered those on the cross.

I can choose to let you stay and hang out, or I can kick you out.

I don’t think I always realized that the choice was mine.

You had me fooled into thinking that my situation determined my feelings. So, a tough situation would mean that I had to deal with the tough feelings.

But, oh, Shame…

It hit me last night as I was doing my mundane evening routine.

The situations we find ourselves in give us choices.

We can hang out with the feelings we have - shame, fear, inadequacy, pain, grief, sorrow. And sometimes we have to do that. Sometimes we need to acknowledge where we are so we know where we need to go.

Then after we’ve determined where we are we can begin to look for the redemption.

* * * * *

You see, confessing our sins doesn’t lead to a lifetime of guilt and shame - as much as you’d like us to think it does, Shame.

No, confessing our sins turns us to God. We have to take our sins, our shame and guilt, our fear and face Jesus.

We have that time in our life where we first meet Jesus. We acknowledge our sin, our need for a Savior and we invite Jesus to be the Lord in our life. At that time, we are counted among the saved and redeemed. We belong to Jesus.

But we aren’t on our own. We aren’t sent to survive the rest of our days on our own.

And maybe that’s the best part of redemption - that we don’t have to continue through life in our own strength.

You see, Shame, you dangle my sins in front of my face. You mock me, you remind me that there is probably trouble around every turn. You point out my failures, the places I’ve fallen short. You remind me of all the shortcomings in life.

You spend so much effort in keeping my attention and you often succeed at making me feel very badly. You keep my face lowered - the ultimate posture of shame.

* * * * *

I hear my name being called, ever so quietly, peacefully. Is it you?

I lift my eyes up, questioning if this is some new way you are taunting me.

It isn’t you calling my name.

It is the only one who can save me, who has saved me. It is the Lord who has already paid the price for my life and continues to redeem each day of my life.

It is the voice of my Savior; my salvation draws near.

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.
Psalm 121

* * * * *

The voice of salvation speaks softly.

It does not mock or taunt as you do, Shame.

It speaks peace to my heart and reignites the flame of joy in my heart.

But now, this is what the Lord says—
he who created you, Jacob,
he who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
Isaiah 41:1,2

Those words - those right there - they remind me that I’m not going to be immune to trouble. I won’t get a free pass from trials and turmoil.

But I have the Lord who goes before me, who protects and guards around me, and who shields me from behind.

He has redeemed me.

He paid the price for my life.

He freely offered his life as payment for my sins.

He didn’t wait until I had my act together to love me.

He loved me in the depths of my wrongdoing.

At the time I most needed His mercy and grace, He extended His hand to take mine and to call me His.

* * * * *

Dear Shame,

I don’t want you here.

I do seem to learn a lot, though, when you come around - which is probably not your intent.

I learn how powerful your attacks can be. I learn just how much damage you can do. I realize you usually travel with friends and that while you may seem pretty innocent yourself, it may be that you cause some of the worst pain and damage because you bring your friends (Fear, Pain, Inadequacy, Exhaustion, Grief and others).

And then I hear the voice of my Redeemer, calling softly.

He never forces us to choose His way. He speaks softly, peacefully, calling gently to our soul.

He waits patiently for us to turn to Him.

And so now, Shame, I’ve heard Redemption calling me. I’ve heard my Savior call my name.

He promises rest, peace, help, a way out.

Dear Shame, Jesus Paid it All

* * * * *

Just a turn toward Him is all it took.

Peace. Hope. Rest. Joy. Gentleness. Salvation.

It’s all there.

And the instant I realized that, an attitude of worship quickly flooded my soul.

I choose the hand of the One who gives peace, who is my hope. I choose the One who provides rest, who IS Joy, and has paid for me.

* * * * *

Dear Shame, here’s the door.

You and your friends are leaving now.

I don’t need any of you hanging around.

You can’t do anything that will benefit my life, and you can’t offer me anything good that I don’t already have.

Most of all, you can’t offer me anything of eternal value. That has already been done.

You see, Jesus paid it all.

Jesus paid it ALL.

O Praise the one who paid my debt and raised this life up from the dead!

The Power of Words {Grace & Truth linkup}

Welcome back to another week of the Grace & Truth linkup. This week’s featured post talks about our words. I’ve struggled through several circumstances with words this week, so I really wanted to share Laurie’s post with you.

She shares, “Our words have either the power to destroy or build up our relationships….I want a loving heart that creates a gracious tongue; a peaceful heart that creates a reconciling tongue; a faithful heart that creates a truthful tongue. These changes have only been able to become a reality in my life as I’ve gotten serious about reading God’s Word every day.”

And she shares how she’s making these changes in her life.

Laurie’s encouragement was just what I needed after a week of battling the power of our words. I hope you’ll hop over and check out her post. Thank you, Laurie, for joining us at Grace & Truth!

Rest {Grace & Truth Linkup}

This week, I’ve intentionally focused on getting some rest. My kids have been away with my parents, so I’ve had extra time to myself (and I did not use it for cleaning!), to rest, to sit quietly, to spend time with my husband, and to curl up with Jesus. So when I saw Jann’s post this week, I knew I wanted to share it with you!

Jann shares the meaning of the Greek word for rest (anapauo), and she shares about the Matthew 11 passage -

“So in essence the word rest in Matthew 11 means
to pause, to stop, to cease.
Jesus is asking us to come to Him and stop, pause, rest!”

Stop by and read Jann’s thoughts on rest, and for the reminder that Jesus wants us to spend time with Him! Thank you for sharing with us, Jann!
